About Max Heinzer

Max Heinzer grew up in Central Switzerland. Neither the structures of the major fencing nations nor ideal physical prerequisites pointed toward a world-class career. It wasn’t the greatest talent that took him to the top, but the courage to do things differently, tireless hard work, and the right mindset.

As the first Swiss fencer, he decided to pursue the path of a professional athlete — in a sport where that was hardly conceivable at the time. He developed his own training methods, questioned the status quo, and shaped international épée fencing with his bold, offensive style.

From a fencer at a small Swiss club, he became one of the most successful épée fencers in history: world champion, three-time European champion, world number 1, three Olympic Games, 19 medals at world and European championships, 18 World Cup victories, and ten uninterrupted years in the world’s top 10.

At least as formative as his successes was his personal development. From an uncompromising lone fighter, he became a team leader who recognized that sustainable peak performance doesn’t come from individual strength alone, but from trust, leadership, and the ability to make others better.

Today, Max Heinzer passes on his experience as president of Swiss Fencing, head of sport at the Fritz Gerber Foundation, and as an entrepreneur.
