"I'm not chasing. I'm creating my own history."

Djokovic am Boden kniend mit offenen Armen

Tomorrow, Novak Djokovic will face Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Australian Open. And as always, many people will only talk about him if he wins. For me, he has already won.

Yes, his path to the semifinal was fortunate. Injuries and withdrawals among his opponents meant he only had to play nine sets to get there. But in the semifinal, the favorite was clear. Against the 24-year-old Jannik Sinner, many believed the 38-year-old Djokovic could not keep up at this level.

For years he has heard the same story:
Too old. Too long at the top. The next generation has arrived.
After more than 15 years of world-class performance, his career is repeatedly declared over—yet he refuses to follow that script.

Before the tournament, people told him: You’re chasing. A reference to the younger competition.

Djokovic responded calmly: “I’m not chasing. I’m creating my own history.”

He came back from a deficit, and after four hours it was clear: Djokovic’s story is still being written.

In the final, Djokovic is not just playing against Alcaraz. He is playing against expectations. Against age stereotypes. Against other people’s narratives. And against that quiet inner voice many of us know: Maybe this is the end.

High performance rarely fails first because of the body.
It fails because of the inner narrative.

Research on self-efficacy and the Age Belief Effect shows that people who hold positive beliefs about their ability as they age remain mentally sharper, emotionally more stable, and physically more resilient for longer. It is not age that limits us first—but the image we hold of it.

Performance follows identity.

Djokovic embodies exactly that. He is not chasing records. He is not defending the past. He remains in creator mode. While others talk about his peak being behind him, he is already working on the next point. It is mental reconstruction in real time.

Because by now he is no longer competing for proof.
He is competing for meaning.

So once again: “I’m not chasing. I’m creating my own history.”

And whether that story ends with a 25th Grand Slam title—we will find out tomorrow.
