Paracycling athlete
«I’m impaired,
not impeded.»
Walter Ablinger
Walter Ablinger stands for a kind of high performance that reaches far beyond sporting achievement: the ability to develop new perspectives after a profound rupture in one’s life, to set clear goals and to keep going, consistently, along one’s own path.
In 1999, a serious workplace accident changed his life fundamentally. The diagnosis – paraplegia – meant a radical break with the life he had led until then. Ablinger decided, however, not to remain with the question of what was no longer possible, but to find out what still was.
Sport became his way back into life. Out of a personal challenge he developed new goals, and the ambition to test his own limits again and again. With remarkable consistency, that path led him to the very top of para-cycling and to several Paralympic medals, two of them gold.
In his keynotes, Walter Ablinger makes resilience, mental strength, confidence and genuine focus on goals tangible – not as theoretical concepts, but as an attitude he had to live under extreme conditions.
This is not about the message of “always achieve more”. It is about the decisive question:
How do we stay capable of acting when the circumstances are suddenly nothing like the ones we planned for?
Walter Ablinger speaks about dealing with setbacks, about the power of goals, about taking responsibility for oneself – and about why our own attitude often determines which possibilities we are able to recognise in the first place.
His story makes one thing clear: high performance does not mean that everything runs perfectly. It begins when we take full responsibility for what we can influence.
With his authentic, down-to-earth and humorous manner, Walter Ablinger connects personal experience with impulses for people and organisations that want to remain capable, resilient and confident, even in demanding times.
An impulse for people who do not ask “Why me?” – but “What do I make of this now?”
